SBA does not Fund Charles Pointe School

Back to the drawing boards. Will the property still be donated for Board of Education?

  1. I was somewhat surprised that the SBA did’t at least partially fund the proposed schoo l on the Charles Pointe property. I woulsd have thought the developers would have had more stroke. Personally, I’m opposed to building a schoo lat Charles Pointe right now using public funds, since it is well out of Bridgeport and, right now, there are isn’t even any infrastructure on that part of the property, let alone a community of homes.
What doesn’t surprise me is that the $10 million request from Marion County was approved. It was probably one of the largest single requests approved by the SBA. Between Allan Mollohan and the Manchin family, Marion County seems to get pretty much whatever it wants these days. Good for that area….but the rest of the region suffers! And it won’t stop until Mollohan is ousted [the sooner, the better] and the Manchins disappear [will THAT ever happen???!!!].

  2. Hey, I was unable to listen to talk radio because I was working this morning, but I have heard tidbits from different people. Anyone care to give a brief overview of what Mike Queen said…something about closing some schools like North View and Adamston?

    Someone set me straight.

  3. I heard only one little snip but I think it was something about putting a WI Middle School on the old Sheraton Hotel site downtown. The City would demolish the old hotel, and the State would give the land to the School Board. Anyone else hear anything about this?

  4. I didnt hear about building a new WI middle school at Sheraton site but I think its a great idea. If we want to save our downtown areas then we need to make investments in our downtowns. Schools are a great addition for vacant properties in our communites. 1st a school then a coffe shop , dry cleaners, gas staions etc.. Small business owners seek out high traffic areas. Land is cheap, infrastructure is present and it helps the property values and makes homes and properties in around downtown areas more desirable.

  5. I think the property where the old Sheraton sits now would be a great location for a new WI Middle School. If the state would donate the property to the city and help the city fund the cost of demolition, the school board would have a great alternative to consider.

Stephen is right. A new middle school there would be a wonderful addition to the downtown area.

What do the rest of you think?

    Mike

  6. Regarding the closing of North View and Adamston…..the only thing I have ever advocated for are “replacement” schools to be build in those communities.

I don’t think anyone on the school board supports “closing” either of those schools. At least not to my knowledge…….but then again the other board members don’t include me in all of their private meetings.

Case in point is the selection of Susan Collins as superintendent last Thursday night. Mr. Reaser had a motion printed on paper with an annual salary ($110,000) already agreed by Mrs. Collins and the other four board members BEFORE the school board meeting even started!

For some reason I didn’t get a copy of that motion.

The other four board members AND MRS. COLLINS resisted my attempt to interview both of the candidates that applied. I wish I could share with you all the bio of the other candidate. You would be impressed!

NO INTERVIEW! Meant no discussion of what goals and objectives we expected Mrs. Collins to work on for the year. No discussion of who would take her place as assistant superintendent.

Brace yourselves for one more year of the same old stuff with Central Office salaries soaring, thousands spent on out-of-state travel and elementary test schools going down due to oversized classes.

I hope that your candidates for the school board will have the courage to make some tought decisions beginning July 1st!

    Mike

  7. Dear Readers,

I just wanted to let you know about unfair assessments in Harrison County by our current Assessor. It seems as if certain wealthy residents have not had their property assessments increased on certain parcels of property in over 10 years while almost all other people are receiving increases in their assessments regularly. In the past two years, over 25,000 letters have been sent out informing residents about increases in their assessments in excess of 10% which is terrible considering the cost of living increases we all have incurred including increases in gasoline($3.65 per gallon), milk and bread. I think we are all under assault as our wages are not keeping up with inflation especially senior citizens as this rise in inflation has been especially hard on them and at the same time our current assessor has continued to increase assessments at an alarming pace. I would like you to review the information contained at http://www.harrisoncounty.com as it contains information that most residents need to be aware of including suspicious assessments and accusations by your county commissioners regarding inconsistencies in assessments across the county. Even if you don’t like the candidate that published the website, you have to believe the research he has conducted is true as he is a local attorney and would be opening himself up to civil lawsuits had he published information that is incorrect. Again, the website http://www.harrisoncounty.com contains all the information residents need to be aware of concerning unfair property tax assessments in our county. Pass the information on to your friends and family including the website address http://www.harrisoncounty.com!
